{Mini Bible Study}  How does GOD see love?

Question: How does GOD perceive love in the bible?

Answer: When it comes to the subject of GOD and love we have to be aware of how GOD sees love. If GOD sees love in one way and we are practicing it in another it really doesn't do us much good. Let’s look at a few verses:

For this is the love of GOD, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 Jn 5:3)

If ye love me, keep my commandments.   (John 14:15)

Do you see how GOD and Jesus equate love WITH obedience in these verses? GOD sees love through our obedience to his commandments. In John 15:10 we read,

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. (John 15:10)

Notice how Jesus says "IF ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love". Here once again Jesus confirms that love for GOD is shown through obedience to HIS commandments. If you keep GOD's commandments you receive his love and HE sees your love for him is real and not just hollow words. To GOD, love and obedience is the same thing! No matter how sincerely we claim to love GOD, and our love may in fact be sincere on our end, it is how GOD perceives love that is important. If how we feel contradicts what GOD actually says, it is not what GOD said that has to change; it is how we feel or how we show those feelings of love for GOD.

Our next logical question would be “why” does GOD perceive obedience as love?
In John 3:16 we read, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” One main doctrine of Christianity is that GOD sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins. The biblical definition of sin is “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: FOR SIN IS TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW”. (1Jn 3:4) GOD also tells us “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1Sa 15:22) It would seem that since GOD sacrificed HIS only son for us HE would consider sacrifice more important, but we have to think deeper than that, for if mankind had obeyed GOD in the beginning sacrifice would never have been necessary!
The bible says “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;” (Rom 6:16), in other words from GOD’s point of view you serve who you obey regardless of who you “say” you serve. From the beginning when Eve ate of the Tree of Knowledge she was disobeying GOD and acting on her own authority, and since you serve who you obey, Eve, by obeying the temptations of Satan and serving Satan, broke the First Commandment “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” (Exo 20:3) and let sin into the world.
Obedience is so important to GOD that he tells us, “For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” (Rom 5:19) In other words it was the sinless life of one hundred percent obedience to GOD’s commandments Jesus led that was just as much responsible for our salvation as his death on the cross itself!
To put things into an even better perspective imagine this. You are a parent of a single child and you have a group of friends who claim to love you. Also, you have created a list of simple, easy rules for your friends to follow that will guarantee that they live lives of peace, safety and happiness. To enforce this list you make it known that if anyone should break the rules the only way to pay for the breaking of the rules will be the sacrifice of your only child. If your friends truly love you as they claim, what now becomes the most important thing they could ever do for you to truly tangibly show you that they love you? The answer is obvious; if they love you they will obey your rules. You would much rather have them obey than to have to sacrifice your child for their disobedience, this is why GOD himself sees obedience as better than sacrifice since every time we break HIS commandments we add to the offense that caused HIM to have to sacrifice HIS own son for our sakes.

Now that we see that GOD perceives love as our obedience to his Ten Commandments lets see if the church has changed any of those commandments and what Jesus says about that change. Let’s look at these few quotes:

“Sunday is our mark of authority… The (Roman Catholic) Church is above the Bible,
and this TRANSFERENCE OF THE SABBATH observance is proof of that fact.”  Catholic
Record September 1, 1923.

"There is no mention of the cessation of the Sabbath and the institution of Sunday in the gospels or in Paul's writings, or in all the Bible; therefore, this has taken place by the apostolic Church instituting it without scripture." - Enchiridion, p.78, 79.

The Bible says 'Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day'. The
Catholic church says 'No! By my divine power, I abolish the Sabbath day,
and command you to keep holy the first day of the week, and lo, the entire
civilized world bows down in reverent obedience to the command of the
Holy Catholic Church. - Enright, Sentinel, June 1893

“Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles… From the beginning to the end of Scripture there is not a single passage which warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.” – Catholic Press (Sydney) August 25, 1900.

These are just a minute sampling of all the historical evidence that shows GOD’s fourth commandment has been changed and in some cases completely forgotten. We now gather for worship on Sunday instead of GOD's commandment Sabbath (Saturday) due to a tradition of man, not through obedience to GOD. Now let's look at what Jesus had to say about replacing GOD's commandments with men's commandments and traditions.

“But he answered and said to them, why do you also transgress the commandment of GOD by your TRADITION? … And you voided the commandment of GOD by your TRADITION … But in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrine the commandments of men.” (Matthew 15:3, 6, 9)

Notice in that verse that Jesus said "BUT IN VAIN THEY WORSHIP ME" because they were observing a commandment of men INSTEAD of the commandments of GOD

This next verse says basically the same thing but it provides a test for you to really see if you are in GOD's love.

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me IN VAIN; their teachings are but rules taught by men…” And HE said to them. “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of GOD in order to observe your own TRADITIONS.” - MARK 7:7, 9

Now we can compare ourselves to the Christians in that verse by asking ourselves two questions.
First, do we honor Jesus with our lips? Yes, we do. Most Christians sit in church every Sunday and proclaim love and loyalty to GOD.
Second, have we set aside the commandments of GOD to observe man-made traditions? Yes, we have. 99% of the world now obeys Sunday worship in place of GOD's commanded Sabbath, or the fourth commandment.

So if we honor Jesus with our lips but have also replaced GOD’s commandments with man-made traditions what does Jesus say is the result of that? He says "They worship me IN VAIN" and also "But in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrine the commandments of men".

Jesus says that your worship is IN VAIN, which means "worthless".  If obeying GOD’s commandments completely is so important and the Sabbath commandment, the fourth commandment, is just as important as the other nine, but the most misunderstood we should take a quick look and see what we are supposed to do on the Sabbath? In Lev 23:3 we read:

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. (Lev 23:3)

I want you to pay attention to where it says "an holy convocation". The original Hebrew word for "convocation" is "miqra", it is pronounced "MIK- RAW", and its literal meaning is "public assembly". So the bible directly orders you to have "a holy public assembly" on the Sabbath Day to show love, loyalty and obedience to GOD. In other words, gather for worship.

Now there is no doubt that the members of the churches of the world are totally sincere in their love for GOD. We are all good Christians trying to do the best we can to love GOD. But no matter how sincere we are it doesn't change the fact that most Christians by changing or ignoring the Sabbath day fourth commandment are in direct disobedience to GOD. The bible says that in the last days the whole world will be deceived into disobedience to GOD. It doesn't say they will "purposefully" disobey GOD, but that they will be misled. Jesus tells us that “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10). The bible also tells us that in the last days “…there come a fallingaway first…” (2Th 2:3) of the people from the word of GOD  and with 99+% of the world ignoring GOD's fourth commandment then most of the world has been unwittingly led into complete disobedience to GOD.

Church is not a social club; it's about loving GOD and showing that love through obedience to HIM as he has asked us to do. No matter how close we feel with GOD we need to consult GOD's word the bible and make sure we are not replacing what GOD says with what we "feel". If our feelings are leading us into disobedience we need to change how we feel, not what GOD has commanded.

Finally in Hebrews Chapter 10 we read:

“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;” (Heb 10:16)

We see that the context of this chapter is the law of GOD, the Ten Commandments, and it goes on to talk about the condition of the church as the day of Jesus’ return approaches,

“Not forsaking THE ASSEMBLING OF OURSELVES TOGETHER, as the manner of
some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day
approaching. For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the
truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of
judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” (Heb 10:25-27)

The “adversaries” are those in disobedience to GOD’s commandments and this chapter tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together as commanded by the law of GOD. This change has slowly been instituted by Satan through generation after generation of interference and deception in the lives of Christians. How odd it is that the only commandment we have totally forgotten is the one that starts with “remember”.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exo 20:8)

Obey GOD to love GOD! Amen!
