In the bible when Jesus is called “good” by a man coming to ask him how he could inherit eternal life Jesus answered,
“Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.” Mark 10:18.
In this reply it appears as if Jesus himself is trying to say he is not good, but that obviously cannot be true since Jesus, as the son of GOD, was also equal part of GOD. In actuality what Jesus was trying to teach us is that “good”, by mankind’s standards, is a relative concept and that the concept of true, just and pure “good” can only be found in GOD and HIS Ten Commandments.
To a rich man “good” is what makes him richer, regardless of how it affects others. To a politician “good” is what increases his voter base regardless of how it affects people who do not vote for him. To a drug addict “good” is getting his next fix. To a thief “good” is committing a profitable theft. To a parent “good” is what benefits their own child regardless of how it may affect someone else’s. And unfortunately, too many modern day Pastor’s, “good” is what fills the pews and the collection plate regardless of whether or not it is an opinion or tradition of man, and not the literal word of GOD.
“Good” in the hands of mankind is a purely relative term, completely reliant on the opinions and desires of the individual without any concern for the peace and well being of all mankind.
Mankind’s concept of “good” is unreliable, sometimes frivolous, often selfish, completely unsubstantial and always changing depending upon the circumstances of one’s desires.
But for us there is a pure, true, fair and just standard of good for all mankind. A standard of good that never changes can always be relied upon and is backed by the complete authority of our all powerful father in heaven.
The Ten Commandments.
Paul, my favorite apostle, writes,
“Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” Romans 7:12.
Only by comparing our desires and actions to those Ten Commandments can we be sure that we are living in GOD’s will and striving to be a part of GOD’s plan to bring eternal health, peace and happiness to all mankind for all eternity. Without a set standard of good, backed by the authority of the SUPREME CREATOR mankind would always and forever be a slave to sin and death. And that set standard is maintained by accepting Jesus Christ as our savior and obeying how he taught us to accept him.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” – Jesus Christ, John 14:15
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12
Unfortunately the commandments of GOD, written with HIS own finger in tablets of stone, have been chipped away at like paint on a wall. First the fourth commandment to keep holy the seventh day Sabbath was chipped away and changed to sunday, and like a painted wall where one spot gets chipped away soon after more and more flakes get chipped away which is exactly what has happened in our modern systems of Christianity. No longer can a pastor fully teach and uphold GOD’s Ten Commandments because in doing so he also has to back up the fourth commandment seventh day Sabbath, which he cannot do without risking breaking up his church. So instead our modern pastors have decided to downplay, rationalize or spiritualize away the importance of the commandments, chipping away at GOD’s authority over our lives and GOD’s promise of an eternal life without death, theft, lies, greed and adultery that destroys our families. And all the while they are doing this they are just helping to degrade our Christianity, our peace of mind, and our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Fortunately for us GOD provides us with a simple test to make sure we are being taught the true good of GOD and Jesus Christ.
And hereby we do know that we know him (Jesus Christ), if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1John 2:3, 4
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5: 17-19
It is very easy to see from these verses that if someone says they know Jesus but does not keep GOD’s Ten Commandments they are telling a lie. And Jesus also tells us that not a single “tittle”, meaning a single letter, of the law would change and we are never to teach them as changed. To double check if someone is teaching us the truth, whether they are pastor, priest, politician or parent, all you have to do is open your bible to Exodus 20 verses 6 though 17 and study to see if what they are teaching matches those verses letter for letter. If they don’t match, you are not being taught the true word of GOD.
The reason Jesus is so blunt and direct that not a single letter of the law should change is because when we change a letter of the first 4 commandments we change and destroy GOD’s claim to authority over us and HIS law and also HIS claim as creator of the universe. When we change a letter of the last 6 commandments we alter the only standard of pure and true “good” in all creation that shows men how to truly and unselfishly love on another. Without an unchanging standard of pure and true good, backed by an all powerful moral authority which is our GOD there could never be an eternal life or an eternal peace because mankind would just continue to repeat the same mistakes over and over again every few generations. The same mistakes that brought sin into existence to begin with.
As the saved continue on into eternity we will still have free will and freedom of choice and it will be those who showed in this life that they truly wanted peace and freedom for all mankind that will continue on in the next. And we show we want that peace and freedom for all mankind by following Jesus and doing as he asked us, to keep the Ten Commandments of GOD his father in heaven.
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love” – Jesus Christ. John 15:10
Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:10
In GODS eyes we show we love one another by keeping HIS commandments.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 1 John 5:2
My wish would be that all mankind adopt GOD’s Ten Commandments as their true, just and holy standard of good to live by. Striving to make it the prime goal of their lives to love Jesus by showing our desire to obey fully what he taught us.
We should show we love GOD and accept him as our prime and holy authority and his son Jesus Christ as our savior by doing the following as he asked us:
Have no other gods but our one true GOD.
Do not engage in idol worship, putting material possessions above GOD.
Never take the lords name in vain.
Remember to keep the seventh day Saturday Sabbath holy, keep the commandments unchanged as taught to us by Jesus Christ (Mat 5:18). Avoid the opinions and assumptions of man on this subject that say the commandment was changed when Jesus bluntly states it would not.
We should also show our love for our fellow man:
Honor thy mother and father.
Do not murder.
Do not commit adultery, destroying families.
Do not steal.
Do not bare false witness, which is to lie.
Do not covet what belongs to another, which is greed.
This is the only pure and just standard of TRUE GOOD in all of creation. As Christians we should strive to preserve and protect every letter of GOD’s law. To ignore these commandments, to change them in any way, or to downplay them for the sake of being told that one is not important any longer is to invite more sin and more chaos into our lives and the lives of our fellow man.
The destruction of GOD’s will and authority in our lives started with one small chip on those two tablets of stone, and Satan has been hammering away at them for 2000 years now.
